Epilepsy Tasmania Services

Each year, the Epilepsy Association of Tasmania is contacted by hundreds of people, requesting information, support and counselling concerning epilepsy. Through our commitment to raising the profile of epilepsy, we are striving to significantly reduce the burden that epilepsy can bring into people's lives. The following is a list of services provided by the Association: -

EPIFILE: a comprehensive epilepsy resource kit for health professionals and clients We also have information kits designed specifically for children and adults and a wide range of books, pamphlets, information sheets, videos, kits and other items – all available to individuals with epilepsy and those affected by epilepsy. If you become a member you will have access to the 'Epilepsy Report' our comprehensive national newsletter and our own state newsletter. The Association as a member of Epilepsy Australia has access to a library that offers the most current information on medical and life-style issues. There are 1500 book titles – a large variety of videos – an extensive collection of epilepsy journals and special collections.

COUNSELLING: Our team of field officers understands epilepsy as a medical condition and provides a range of short effective counselling therapies. Epilepsy affects every part of a person's life as well as those close to them. The multi-disciplinary approach enables us to manage any situation that epilepsy creates. This confidential counselling service can be conducted by phone, email, in our regional office or your home.

CASE MANAGEMENT FOR COMPLEX & LONG TERM SOLUTIONS: Our field officers are involved either as lead or support counsellors with other agencies and medical personnel (wherever appropriate) in the management of some very complex conditions.

COMMUNITY EDUCATION: We provide responsive (often tailored) information services to community organisations, health and welfare groups, business, education providers, students, state institutions and other groups.

SPECIALISED TRAINING PROGRAMS: The Association is developing specialised training programs, modules and workshops to be used in conjunction with government agencies for health professionals, people with epilepsy and their carers.

ADVOCACY – PERSONAL, STATE & NATIONAL: Many people with epilepsy have to cope with prejudice and misunderstanding in their daily lives. We will work with employers, organisations, governments and individuals to change these situations.

SUPPORT NETWORKS: Because of the complex nature of epilepsy, people often like the support of other people in similar situations.

SUPPORT GROUPS: 'Mutual support' groups are supported and resourced by the Association throughout Tasmania.

CAMPS FOR CHILDREN, ADULTS, FAMILIES & CARERS: This program provides each person with the chance to experience activities that for us are commonplace. Without expert supervision, these activities are just too dangerous. For many, their epilepsy is so severe that it is the first time they have ever been away from their families.

AUSTRALIA'S MOST COMPREHENSIVE EPILEPSY LIBRARY: The Association as a member of Epilepsy Australia has access to a library that offers the most current information on medical and life-style issues. There are 1500 book titles – a large variety of videos – an extensive collection of epilepsy journals and special collections.

CLINIC SUPPORT & HOSPITAL VISITS: Our field officers work closely with health professionals. This includes providing support at epilepsy clinics and visiting patients in major hospitals throughout Tasmania.

SEMINARS: The Association conducts information nights and seminars with guest speakers throughout Tasmania
